Self Guided
With choice at every stage, this is a centre-based, self-guided walking holiday in Italy’s Dolomites, arguably the world’s most beautiful mountains. You choose whether to stay half-board in a hotel – or self-cater in an apartment. As for the walking, all our itineraries are tried and tested classics, carefully grouped and graded: easy & leisurely, moderate or challenging. You can either focus exclusively on walks in one category – or you can mix it up – pushing yourself one day and taking it easy the next. The choice is yours! Whatever you choose, the scenery is magnificent.
Abundant Ideas & Information – Browse all our walks (and other fabulous proposals too) in our Ideas & Information Files, which are available throughout your stay. Route Laminates for every walk can be borrowed to help with navigation. This holiday is ideal for couples or groups of different levels of fitness or ambition. Lazy days are fine too and it is easy to relax in this idyllic mountain retreat, where there is so much to see and do. Our Ideas & Information Files also contain details of bike routes, Via Ferrata, places of interest and various locally-supplied alpine activities.
What makes Collett’s different ? Our dedicated team of walk advisors and a popular Collett’s institution called Office Hour. Our own walkers host Office Hour each early evening over a pre-dinner drink, providing informal and sociable access to our extensive local knowledge, and ensuring you create a succession of unforgettable days out in the mountains. Inevitably, we can help like-minded walkers of similar fitness levels to team up together, should they wish to venture out in a small group.
Delightful Accommodation Options – The Alta Badia is one of the prettiest valleys in the Alps. We have two chalet hotels, one in Corvara (Bracun), the other in nearby Badia (Haus Valentin). Both host Office Hour daily and are home to a Collett’s Walks Team. Within easy walking distance of these, we offer some exquisite hotel options and delightful self-catering apartments.
Arrive & Depart on Saturday or Wednesday – Flexible Stays & Airport Transfers – The duration of your holiday is flexible. Our arrival and departure days are Saturdays & Wednesdays. This gives you the choice of a 7, 10, 11 or 14 night stay – or indeed a short break of 3 or 4 nights. Airport Transfers from Venice are available on Saturdays and Wednesdays at £80 return, but you might choose to fly-drive or self-drive. We can also book private transfers at a one-way cost of approximately €275 if you and your party prefer to eliminate any waiting on your days of travel. Driving from the UK is also quite popular and Calais is 12 – 14 hours.

In Corvara & Badia, we believe we are at the heart of the world’s most dramatic and beautiful mountains. Over the years it has been a genuine pleasure to watch the reaction of our guests as they arrive and are awe-struck by their surroundings. The close harmony of startling and monumental rock formations with the enchanting alpine valley landscapes of wildflower-strewn pastures and picturesque Tyrolean villages is as enchanting as it is staggering.
With their explosive shapes and unique colours, the Dolomites are the crown jewels of the Alps. At every turn you are stopped in your tracks by their sheer magnificence. We know you will share our appreciation of this natural splendour. It is a paradise for walkers, flower enthusiasts, artists, photographers, Via Ferrata and alpine enthusiasts or anyone seeking out the tranquillity of an idyllic alpine retreat.
The unspoilt Tyrolean villages bewitch you on a human scale with wooden chalets in a landscape of wildflower-strewn pastures, while the colossal natural monuments, which are the Dolomites, tower above you; castles of rock, which soar to the sky as if frozen in mid-explosion.
The Dolomites lie in Italy’s northernmost region, the Trentino/South Tyrol, which borders Austria and Switzerland to the north. To the south are the alluring historical cities of Venice and Verona. Geologists believe they were heaved up by great movements in the earth’s crust 50 million years ago when Europe and Africa collided. Since then the actions of ice and water have carved them into overwhelming sculptural forms. More recently history has shaped the area. After WWI, the area passed from Austria to Italy. Mussolini failed to Italianise the region and the area now thrives on the harmonious co-existence of the Austrian and Italian cultures in a region where Latin meets Germanic.
Add to these cultures, the influence of a modern mountain-dwelling community with an enlightened, yet conservative approach to tourism and the result is a unique atmosphere of character and charm in a place, where there is lots to see and do.
The Alta Badia in the central Dolomites is one of the most beautiful valleys in the Alps, acquiring UNESCO World Heritage status in 2009. The valley wends its way below majestic peaks to Monte Sella (3152m), a glorious and colossal plinth of unique rock formations which loom large over exquisite picture-postcard alpine landscapes.
The valley is home to our chalet hotels, luxury hotels and self-catering apartments. We are in the villages of Corvara and Badia, both boasting superb access to numerous walks of all grades, as well as Via Ferrata and a host of locally-supplied alpine activities and places of interest. Whatever you choose to do, you’ll soon be glad you came.
Both Corvara & Badia have stunning backdrops that will absorb you for hours. The west-facing massifs glow rose pink at sunset, as if on fire. This mystical phenomenon is the Enrosadira and it is especially ablaze in September. People gaze in awe from the valleys, which by contrast are a gentle and pastoral tapestry of wildflower meadows, woodland and sleepy hamlets, where the window boxes of old farmhouses overflow with colour.
Don’t agonise whether to stay in Corvara or Badia. The Natural Parks into which you will venture are easily accessed from both villages, which are linked by a riverside track and other woodland trails. Both villages provide a labyrinth of hiking options at all levels, with mesmerising views, profuse flora and fauna, charming woodland and, depending on how high you go, some high level drama that will stay with you forever.
This place might be idyllic and enchanting from down in the valley, but if you choose our high level treks, be prepared for jaw-dropping experiences in the rocky reaches of the Puez Odle and Fanes National Parks, both of which spectacularly dominate the Alta Badia.
Corvara is the principal village of the Alta Badia and has two gondolas, one to the Pralongià Plateau at 1980m for easier and moderate walks, the other to the eastern turrets of the Sella at 2152m for dramatic high level walks and some Via Ferrata.
It is an unrivalled location for walking holidaymakers, offering a variety of shops – some quite stylish – cafés, restaurants, pizzerias and many sports facilities too, including skating, a swimming lake, climbing wall, golf, tennis, archery etc.
Badia is just down the road, an authentic alpine gem with a chairlift that provides walkers with the most idyllic ascent out of the village over flower meadows to a truly beautiful launchpad for moderate and high level hikes that all unfold under one of alpine Europe’s most dramatic massifs. Badia is not as big as Corvara, but it has all the essential amenities, including a few shops, cafés and bars.

Self-guide
All fitness levels
Our unique and flexible walking holiday formula is your itinerary.
It allows you to choose daily whether to do easy, moderate or challenging walks safe in the knowledge that our dedicated team of walk advisors are available every night at ‘Office Hour’ to help you plan your next adventure.
Collett’s was built on this formula and our mission is to ensure you can explore this beautiful natural paradise just as you wish. Exhilaration and wonderment will abound, whichever walks you choose. And if you and your travelling companions vary in ability, you can choose different walks and still enjoy the same holiday. With numerous waymarked tracks and trails radiating out at all levels and in all directions, you will surely get just what you want from your time in one of the prettiest valleys in the Alps.
As a springboard for walking holidays in the Dolomites, this is unbeatable. We are flanked by two stunning natural parks: the Fanes to the east, stretching dramatically to Cortina d’Ampezzo; the Puez-Odle to the west, linking us to the glorious Val Gardena. To the south, our panoramas are graced by the sheer flanks of Monte Sella (3152m) and the brilliant glacier of the Marmolada, Queen of the Dolomites at 3343m. In the distant north, the snow-capped peaks of Austria glisten. This is a UNESCO World Heritage treasure, claimed by many to be the most beautiful mountains in the world. Whichever walks you choose, you will soon be in awe.
At 50 million years old, the Dolomites are geological youngsters with uneroded shapes that will startle you. This is Collett’s original home and we know these mountains intimately. Our walks are an unrivalled collection of tried and tested gems that will inspire you. Off the beaten track, they are rich in flora, fauna and mesmerising scenery. Easier walks unfold in exquisite flower meadows, woodland, sleepy hamlets and along riverside tracks, whilst the challenging treks will expose you to the most dramatic rock formations in the world. We will help you choose the walks that keep you in your comfort zone, whether you self-guide or join us; whether you want a gentle stroll or something more challenging.
Whilst you may arrive with every intention of enjoying a week of predominantly easy, moderate or challenging walks – we know from experience that ‘best laid plans’ can and do change from time to time. This might be as a result of the weather, wanting to take it a bit easier, or indeed because you fancy a bit more of a challenge. This is where ‘Office Hour’ and our dedicated team of walk advisors come into their own. With their extensive local knowledge, and our uniquely flexible format, you can tailor and flex your walk plans to create a succession of wonderful self-guided walks.
Each day you are free to choose either an easy, moderate, or challenging walk to self guide. All our routes are tried and tested classics, and they have been graded as follows :
Our extensive and invaluable ‘Ideas & Info’ files will always be available. These feature all our walks from idyllic strolls to dramatic high trails. For each walk we give the duration, ascent, degree of difficulty and the relevant section of map. You can also borrow on a daily basis an easy-to-carry Route Laminate for each walk. The files also contain numerous Via Ferrata options, scenic drives, places of interest, bike rides, ideas for rainy days (as if!) and other days out.
On a Classic Collett’s Walking Holiday in Italy’s Dolomites, Office Hour takes place each evening (except Wednesdays) at your accommodation or within easy walking distance of it. Over maps and a relaxing pre-dinner drink, you can either chat with our walk advisors about what your option are, given you chosen grade or just glean advice and ideas to ‘do your own thing’.
But it is not as formal as its name suggests. Indeed, it is optional and informal. Many guests just drop in for a sociable drink with other guests. Either way, another memorable day in the mountains takes shape, leaving you to enjoy the evening with everything sorted for the next day.
By the way, our ‘Ideas & Info’ files also include details of 25 Via Ferrata routes for climbers, 15 scenic itineraries for road cyclists and 10 brilliant challenges for mountain bikers, not to mention scenic drives and other days out. We can also help you book alpine activities that are available locally through third parties, with whom we work closely. These include horse-riding, paragliding, sport climbing, mountain biking etc.
This is an outstanding area for wildflowers and it is one of life’s great pleasures to walk among them. In the early part of June we run wildflower specific walking breaks offering daily excursions into the profuse flower meadows and other places where celebrated and rare species flourish. Over the years we have documented all the best locations and this invaluable knowledge grows each year, providing so much pleasure for flower enthusiasts. The Flora of the Dolomites walking break
The Dolomites present a slightly different geology from the main alpine chain and many rare species are at their best here, notably Campanula morettiana, Eritrichium nanum, Paederota bonarota, Papaver rhaeticum, Potentilla nitida, Ranunculus seguieri and the very beautiful Physoplexis comosa. Some of the most renowned floral sites in the Alps are the nearby Bindelweg, Belvedere, Pordoi, Sella Massif and Val Gardena. Habitats vary from vivid and profuse upland meadows teeming with orchids and wildflowers to rocky outcrops where countless alpine gems thrive in the most perfect of settings.
In spring, as the snow retreats to the highest peaks, crocuses and hepaticas appear and the flower season begins. By mid June, the alpine pastures are smothered in startling colour – the yellows of the arnicas, geums and poppies – the pinks, mauves and reds of the soldanellas, daphne, primulas andrhododendrons -the stunning blues of the campanulas and gentians and, in its high mountain home, the ‘King of the Alps’, Eritrichium nanum. July enhances this botanical array with edelweiss, lilies, potentillas and orchids, creating a truly floral paradise under a high summer sun.
Click here for our Summer 2019 Wildflower Report.
The intermediate walker and gentle stroller will thrive on the many waymarked paths, which wend their way at low and medium altitude between picturesque hamlets. You can enjoy the spectacular scenery in many different ways, perhaps meandering casually for two or three hours on riverside tracks and through wildflower-strewn meadows, or by venturing a little higher on to the woodland trails, upland pastures, and occasionally the lower rocky reaches of the massifs themselves. Many of these routes were originally hunting or smuggling trails.
Welcoming mountain huts, known as rifugios, are dotted around this extensive network of numbered paths, each one with its own sun terrace, where walkers soak up their magical surroundings over well-earned refreshment. Some people come here with specific intentions: fossil collectors love the region’s rich geology; artists and photographers try to capture their own visions of these unique mountains; bird and wildlife observers can admire a diverse range of fauna and, whilst spotting a pair of golden eagles is fortunate, sightings of buzzards, chamois, deer and the comical marmots punctuate these idyllic days out.
It is hard to think of anywhere in Europe that offers trekkers such good access to sensational high trails and protected paths. Rich in variety and wow-factor, it is all on our doorstep. Expect to be mesmerised. From Corvara and Badia, you can venture on foot into both the Puez Odle and Fanes national parks on walks of a lifetime. Just to the south of Corvara the valley reaches its terminus and here we are towered over by the colossal flanks of Monte Sella, a natural plinth, monumental in size and splendour, where you might easily spend a week without repeating the same walk.
Further afield, yet still within easy access, there is Cristallo (3221m), Tofana (3244m), Lagazuoi & Cinque Torre (2800m) with its World War Tunnels and Open-air WWI Museum and, of course, the Marmolada, our highest peak at 3343m.
The rifugios are a special part of trekking in the Dolomites at higher altitudes. The welcome is warm, whilst the food and refreshment are excellent and affordable. Opening on a seasonal basis, they vary from timbered huts to stone lodges. They offer unforgettable panoramas from their sun terraces. Some are close to chairlifts and cable car stations, others are remote, perhaps sitting where two trails cross. Finding the rifugios is easy, as there are good trail signs at regular intervals. In these high and remote places, a heart-warming sense of camaraderie always seems to prevail amongst walkers.
Via Ferrata is a key Dolomites attraction and we can provide extensive support for self-guided Via Ferrata. Here in the Alta Badia we are in the greatest concentration of Via Ferrata in the world. Originally built to assist military movements during WWI, Via Ferrata are protected scrambling routes, comprised of fixed cables, ladders and gorge-spanning bridges, which assist your ascent of dramatic massifs, after which you can walk on to a nearby rifugio or descend back to the start via a path.
You can do the Via Ferrata of your choice as and when you please, although you should be well prepared, vertigo-free, sure-footed, reasonably fit and aware of alpine dangers.
Our Ideas & Info Files detail up to 20 local Via Ferrata and on a daily basis you can borrow a Collett’s Route Laminate, which will correspond to the route of your choice. We keep up-to-date weather reports, which are essential for planning. At Office Hour you will meet other enthusiasts and it is not uncommon for guests to team up to do mutually attractive itineraries together. Our Walks Team will include someone who can specifically offer information and opinions on numerous exciting local routes.
We can also help you with quick and hassle-free kit hire and we can introduce you to local mountain guides, should you prefer the security of their expertise. For self-guided Via Ferrata, a hire car is highly recommended, as routes are generally off the beaten track. Guides are not cheap, but they do provide transport and kit.

We have two chalet hotels, two exquisite hotels & several self-catering apartments.
Whether you want half-board luxury, traditional B&B or the independence of self-catering, we have the perfect accommodation for your walking holiday in the Dolomites. Take a look at the following:
Nestled under Sassongher (2665m), Bracun is a 5 minute stroll from Corvara’s attractive centre with its shops, cafes, restaurants and gondola stations. Bracun is a fabulous mix of comfort and relaxation with stunning views from its sun terrace. Nearby, idyllic tracks traverse flower meadows interlinking with moderate and high level paths.
Perched above the pretty village of Badia, this was a small traditional Tyrolean hotel until Collett’s arrived here in 1999. Views over the village to the awe-inspiring Fanes massif will absorb you for hours. From the door exquisite riverside and woodland trails radiate into beautiful alpine landscapes. The nearby village chairlift ascends over picturesque upland pastures to Santa Croce, a spot you will never forget.
This gorgeous hotel is a supreme mix of traditional and up-to-the-minute style. Balanced on a natural balcony above Corvara, this is a self-indulgent treat of gourmet food, complete relaxation, sensational views and unassuming hospitality. For a real treat, check out their panoramic suites.
Located in peaceful woodland just above Badia’s village centre, the Hotel Melodia combines a daring modern design with a loyalty to its Tyrolean roots. With gorgeous views over the village to the monumental walls of the Fanes massif, it is just 2 or 3 minutes on foot to the village, several idyllic trailheads, the chairlift and to our local base at Haus Valentin.
If a self-catering catering holiday takes your fancy, we have several delightful apartments in Corvara and Badia. Each of them is close to a Collett’s-hosted base, so that it is easy to wander along to Office Hour and plan your days. Nearby shops will keep you well stocked up and both villages have excellent restaurants and pizzerias.

Your own Collett’s Portal – Soon after you book your holiday, you will have access to your own online portal, via which we provide everything you need to know in the run-up to your holiday: packing suggestions, arrival instructions etc. You can also upload information to your portal, such as dietary requirements, special requests and travel details. We want you to hit the ground running when you arrive at the start of a plain-sailing and memorable holiday experience.
Our Day Off – Tuesday is the day off for our Walks Team in the Dolomites. There is no Office Hour. However, there is always somebody to meet and settle in new arrivals. Breakfast is served as normal. Dinner is not provided in our chalet hotels and guests have an opportunity to eat out locally. As for the hotels Melodia & Panorama, dinner is available and included in your holiday.
At Your Own Risk – Please scroll down to read notes under the heading – At Your Own Risk. These are important and refer to any walks proposals we might give you, either verbally or through our ‘Ideas & Info’ files.
Transport during your holiday – Our most popular self-guided routes use local buses, chairlifts, cable cars etc. to good effect (which you pay for locally) – unless, of course, we are venturing out from the door. Even so, some guests choose to hire a car – or indeed self-drive – as this guarantees complete flexibility on your days of arrival and departure, and will allow you to explore places of interest if you fancy a day off walking.
August in the Dolomites – this is high season, especially the middle two weeks of August. Even so, it is a delightful time to be here and a vibrant and colourful atmosphere prevails along the whole valley. Lots of events take place locally, from vintage car rallies to open-air concerts. Certain walks get overcrowded, especially near the tops of local cable cars, but we know which walks to offer you and how to get off the beaten track. For active families, it can be a lot of fun! Read more about August here.
Special Dietary Requirements & Severe Allergies – It is important you tell us about any special dietary requirements (vegetarian, gluten free etc.) when you book your holiday. Please only tell us about requirements, not preferences, as most hotels, particularly smaller establishments, can only cater for essential requests. If you have a ‘severe food allergy’ that represents a health threat of any sort, we strongly recommend that you are carrying the necessary medication during your holiday with us.
Walking Holiday & Travel Insurance – We recommend you buy a good insurance package at the time of booking (or certainly prior to purchasing flights or booking ferries etc.), so that you are covered in the unlikely event of you having to cancel for an ‘insurable’ reason. Our self-guided itineraries have been organised so that you might enjoy a route and associated accommodation you may not otherwise have discovered having organised the itinerary yourself. It represents nothing more than the opportunity to go out on a series of beautiful walks in wonderful walking areas, with the support of knowing that many of the logistics have been arranged for you. It is a fact that hill and mountain walking can and is associated with personal injury and death. By coming to such areas, you are exposing yourself and your party to the possibility of personal injury or even death. In such an event, Collett’s Limited trading as Collett’s Mountain Holidays will not be held responsible for your interest in the outdoors and your involvement in walking, which can occasionally have tragic consequences. The information provided uses only marked paths which are in use at the time of writing, however, it is your responsibility to continually assess the suitability and safety of the route throughout the walk and to undertake any action necessary to avoid any terrain which each or any member of the group is not comfortable with. The route choice also assumes an ability to read maps and navigate competently. It is the responsibility of each individual in the group to make an assessment of the information provided, and to make an informed decision about whether the itinerary is suitable for them. Finally, during your village to village holiday organised by Collett’s Mountain Holidays you act at your own risk on any ideas, information and opinions included in any material prepared by us or on our behalf to help you get the most from the area.

The fact that I keep coming back to Haus Valentin shows how much I enjoy my holidays there.

A week with Collett's in the Dolomites staying at Haus Valentin. Well organised, friendly and well priced. What’s not to like. 3rd time with Collett's and absolutely no reason we won’t use them again.
This was our second year at Pension Angelo and once again we throughly enjoyed ourselves. It is stunning area with plenty of varied routes. This year we didn't do Colletts-arranged scheduled walks but organised the days ourselves. Nevertheless the team were very helpful in advising us and helping us sort out our days. Googled walking holidays and found you! The great thing about this holiday was it enabled us to do more challenging walks than we would have done if we had been organising walks ourselves and this was extremely enjoyable and satisfying. Very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff, and stunning scenery.
I was with a group and Collett's was discovered by one of our members. We all liked staying in one chalet and hiking out form there as well as having a variety of levels of difficulty to choose from.

I have a great track record with Collett's - I've always had excellent holidays with Collett's.
We joined a hiking group in Victoria, BC, Canada early in 2019. Twice heard folks on the trail talking about Collett's in very positive terms. The second time the people were talking about how they were going to the Dolomites walking with Collett's. The style of the tour, with the choice of going on walks or on our own, with office ho(Read more...)
We would especially like to thank the guides and Ali and Alex who were organizing all details from Haus Valentin. Each one of the guides was friendly, fun, knowledgeable, and amazingly talented. Their experience in the mountains and with the local culture made the trip and each hike a success.
Collett's Mountain Holidays gave the int(Read more...)
Once again we have had a great holiday in the Dolomites staying At Chalet Angelo. You really have a great team all of whom go out of their way to ensure each person has a great holiday. The food was outstanding and office hour a great oportunity to meet other guests. With a great range of walks on offer I took advantage and walked alm(Read more...)
Me and my two sons had the best five days ever in the Dolomites, The organization was spot on , punctual and helpful. We stayed at Chalet Roch in Corvara , very clean and comfortable. The only thing we missed was the tea/ coffee making facilities in the room, that would have been great after a long wet walk! That’s only a minor point(Read more...)
We booked a 2 night, 3 day 'difficult' hut-to-hut trek with Collett's and had a great time. The whole trip was well orgnaised and we loved the rifugios. Materials (maps, FAQs, etc) were provided well in advance.
Everything about my Collett's holiday was incredible... from the service level I got when booking my trip by phone, to the quality of the chalet and food, and most of all the people who work there... who were all utterly fantastic.
I was recommended to Collett's by another hiking company, who said they are the best... and best-priced(Read more...)
We had a fantastic week with Collett’s in Chalet Angelo. The staff were really helpful (Max in particular) and the food was super (Tom). The accommodation was lovely and the views across the valley from the balcony each evening were amazing.
We had great weather and managed to get out and climb 5 via ferrata during our week, including(Read more...)
I was part of a group of a recent 10 day walking holiday in Corvara. Via Ferrata was a "taster" for me and a thrilling experience. I would thoroughly recommend this holiday:)
The weather was great in August 2019. Collett's staff were excellent. They were very friendly, mature, experienced and well-equipped with people's & communicatio(Read more...)
This was an excellent trip and coming back to work has been really tough this week however we do have several hundred pictures to edit and look back on! Everything went really smoothly your maps were clear and the Rifugios excellent although as a non meat eater I may well have consumed my body weight in cheese in various forms! Thanks(Read more...)
Office Hour is a great idea - informative and fun. The most amazing thing about Collett's is what a remarkable group of truly exceptional young people you employ. They couldn't have been more friendly, helpful or obliging, and they were intelligent and fun as well.
Another brilliant Collett's Walking Holiday - we have done skiing several times and this is our second walking holiday.
The package hasn't changed over the 18 years we have been customers. There is NO selling of 'extras' in resort unlike other operators.
The operation is slick
The OUTSTANDING feature is the young people (and one or (Read more...)
The level of information provide before booking was outstanding and it was clear that the company really knew what it was doing. As the only vegetarian staying at the Chalet I was very well catered for by the chefs who provided some lovely vegetarian alternatives for me.
I will be returning for another holiday
Amazing views, amazing walks, amazing team (Tom, Max, Becky, Alex, John, Caroline, Ali and everyone else involved were awesome). From the moment I arrived to the moment I left the team made me feel so at home and loved it (best holiday I have had in a very long time) nothing was too much trouble and even after very long days the guys were brill...
My daughter and I had a great time. The scenery and wildflowers were wonderful. Length and difficulty of the hikes was just right. I am recommending to friends.
This was our second holiday with Collett's to Corvara. This time there were 3 generations of our family. The booking system was easy and we sought advice from your office in helping to decide what accommodation would suit us best. The youngest at 8 and 3 enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere in the chalet. We gave feedback on the activities(Read more...)
