Winter is coming – slowly!

Winter is at least trying to take hold of the Dolomites, although we still await a good dump of snow. Cold temperatures are gradually transforming the landscape. Waterfalls have frozen to the cliff faces, artificial ski pistes are snaking their way down between the trees and there’s a noticeable nip in the air. About 40% of pistes are open in the Alta Badia with more forecast to open soon.

Ice sculptures have also started materialising in the villages. These are created by spraying water from a tower scaffold and allowing intricate icy formations to grow in the dropping temperatures. Sculpture is a big part of the culture here in the South Tyrol, with wood carving in the summer and snow and ice sculptures in the winter months. The locals even host competitions to compare and showcase their finest work.

There are also a lot of natural ice formations starting to appear in the area, with winning examples being spotted in the rivers, lakes and falls. Take a look at these examples found by the Collett’s resort team, which is currently in training for the coming season.
