Walking in Andalucia on a Collett’s holiday
For walkers, we offer 5 memorable days out walking in Andalucia. We offer walking weeks here in Spring and Autumn when temperatures are ideal for walking. Our holidays run from Saturday to Saturday. Each day we offer both a harder high level walk and an easier moderate one, on an organised group walking basis. Our local day-off is Wednesday and we can help you visit local places of interest, such as Granada or Nerja caves. Unlike our other destinations, we do not offer self-guided walking here, due to the limited way-marking and quality of maps.
La Axarquía in Andalucía is a mountainous region of ‘fincas’, farmhouses and pretty whitewashed hilltop villages of Moorish origin, interspersed on hillsides of olive, almond and vine.
Canillas de Albaida lies under the stunning rocky peaks of the Atalaya and Verde Mountains of the Sierra Tejeda Natural Park, which rises to 2065m and forms the natural frontier between the provinces of Málaga and Granada. They offer spectacular views of the Mediterranean coast and adjacent mountain ranges, including the Sierra Nevada and the distant Atlas mountains of North Africa.
Only recently discovered by British walkers, this is an area of fascinating and genuinely mountainous walks, which feature ancient rocky trails, mule tracks, Roman paths and the old ‘Silk Route’ that snakes its way through La Axarquia to Granada.
The rural limestone landscapes through which we walk are impressive and absorbing. They are punctuated by impressive peaks, the distant Mediterranean, ancient oak woods, Roman bridges, vineyards, olive groves and step-back-in-time white Moorish villages with their exquisite examples of ancient Mudejar architecture. You will also see fast-flowing rivers and spectacular waterfalls, which have carved out remarkable canyons known locally as cahorros.
There is an abundance of flora and fauna with many species being unique to the sierras, notably the raptors. You should also spot eagles, peregrine falcons and golden orioles.
Daily, Free & Optional – Unfailingly Breathtaking
Your stay will surely be enhanced by our own hosts. You can join them day to day on the stunning organised walks – except Wednesdays, our local day-off. You simply choose the walk that takes your fancy – see below. All our walks take place in a relaxed and easy-going atmosphere. Armed with a packed lunch (available locally for purchase), we generally set out at around 9am and, depending on the itinerary, return to the village in the early to mid afternoon, allowing you enough time to relax after the walk, maybe over a drink on the terrace or a stroll through the village. Here are the walks we offer on a daily basis:
A High Level or Harder Walk
Approx. 12km – 15km, 600m – 800m, 4-5 hours
Venture into the mountains on higher trails amidst rugged landscapes.
An Easier-Moderate Walk
Approx. 8km – 12km, 200m – 500m, 3-4 hours
Farmhouses and pretty whitewashed hilltop villages – Some easier higher level paths

Planning your days and more at Office Hour
Over a pre-dinner drink, Office Hour takes place in the top floor of the Restaurant la Plaza or in the square on mild evenings (except Wednesday). This is an opportunity to hear information from Mick and our hosts about the two organised group walks on offer the following day, look over the walk route cards and maps for them, and ask any questions. Together you can decide which of the two might suit you best and sign up ready for the following morning. You can also chat with our hosts about places of interest and other days out for the Wednesday day off, such as a visit to Granada or Nerja and the coast.
Office Hour is nothing like as formal as its name suggests. It is run slightly differently to our other resorts, and the walk options are presented and talked through by Mick and our hosts on a group basis rather than individually. It is a great chance to sit down with a drink and chat with fellow guests and our hosts. It then naturally flows on to the evening meal, where all our guests sit together around large tables, leaving you to enjoy the evening with everything sorted.
