Chalet Verena – Corvara
Chalet Verena, Corvara, Italy

Chalet Verena provides modern and comfortable accommodation with eleven delightful en suite double bedrooms. It is just yards from a wooden bridge that crosses the river to the meadows below the Sella Massif and is a stone’s throw away from the village centre with its cafes, bars, shops, ice rink and more. Nestled spectacularly under the vast and dramatic walls of the Sella massif, Corvara is a beautiful alpine resort for walkers and mountain enthusiasts. Chalet Verena has a prime location just a few yards away from the village centre.

Centrally located in Corvara, you can take the Col Alt chairlift up onto the Pralongià Plateau where low level walkers will thrive amongst the flower meadows. The Pralongià Plateau is a labyrinth of gentle walks interspersed with quaint and hospitable mountain huts, each with sensational views and excellent food which is refreshingly cheaply priced. There are many challenging moderate and high level walks that can be found right from the door.

Chalet Verena – Corvara

Perfect Village Location

We run Chalet Verena ourselves, so you can be sure of the highest levels of hospitality in a home from home atmosphere. Each evening (except Wednesdays) our chalet hosts serve an appetising 3 course dinner with wine. After dinner guests linger around the dining table, enjoying the company of like-minded people, drift over to the comfortable lounge area to play a game or read a book or take a walk into town and one of the many cafés or bars in Corvara.

Comfortable bedrooms

Bedrooms here are large and comfortable and all have en suite bathrooms. Each of the beds are ‘Austrian Twins’ (two single beds in a double frame) and all have a pull out single bed perfect for a third person.

Evenings in Chalet Verena – Office Hour & Dinner

We hold Office Hour in the dining room at Chalet Verena, every evening (not Wednesday) between 6 and 7pm. Here you can chat with our hosts about organised itineraries for the following day, or pore over piste maps to create your own self guided itineraries… or simply enjoy a sociable drink in the company of other like-minded guests.

At dinner, the atmosphere around the table is informal and it is easy to unwind: people with largely common interests (and inspired by a beautiful day in the mountains) talk and laugh over good food and drink until well after coffee has been served. Over the years we have regularly been overwhelmed by the heartwarming and friendly atmosphere that prevails in our chalets. Frankly, it is a delight to witness the friendships that are built on these chalet holidays. Goodbyes amongst guests and hosts are often quite emotional!

You can stay in Chalet Verena on a halfboard basis.

  • Great food and outstanding hospitality

Chalet Haus Valentin – Badia
Chalet Haus Valentin - Walking Holidays with Collett's

Our base in Badia is Chalet Haus Valentin. Perched just above the village in a stunning and tranquil location, its modern exterior disguises the fact that it was once a small and traditional Tyrolean hotel. As a Collett’s hosted chalet, it is a gem – it enjoys a warm and hospitable atmosphere – big enough to have your own space, small enough to get to know other guests and indulge in the sociable and convivial atmosphere that punctuates a chalet holiday. The bedrooms are all en suite and many a sociable evening is spent in its comfortable and spacious bar, where people congregate before and after dinner to chat over a drink.

Located in the stunning Alta Badia right opposite one of the area’s most sensational massifs (Santa Croce, 3,026m), Chalet Haus Valentin is the ideal location for walkers of all abilities. Many walks can be done from the door, although we also make good use of local buses to reach the start of our favourite trails in neighbouring villages and valleys.

Chalet Haus Valentin – Badia

A Wonderful Chalet Experience

Haus Valentin has a warm, down-to-earth atmosphere, big enough to have your own space, small enough to get to know people easily. From the bar, the view over the village to the towering walls of Santa Croce and the Fanes massif is breathtaking and it will absorb you for hours, especially at sunset when its flame-red walls make an awesome backdrop to the village. French windows open on to the sun terrace from the bar and here walkers gather in the mornings and gaze at the surroundings.

Haus Valentin is the perfect springboard for a memorable walking holiday. Coupled with the care and attention to detail of our hosts here, we will ensure your days are plainsailing and exhilarating, whatever it is that brings you here in the summer.

Comfortable bedrooms

Bedrooms here are comfortable and all have en suite bathrooms. We have a range of rooms, including doubles, twins, triples and four singles.

The Saning Family, Office Hour & Dinner

Haus Valentin is jointly hosted by Collett’s and its owners, who are our great friends, the Saning family. Monica and Rainer make a wonderful team in the kitchen and their combination of traditional Tyrolean and Italian cuisine is appetising and delicious. Six evenings a week they serve a three course dinner (with wine included). Breakfast is served daily. Cristina (Monica’s daughter and Rainer’s wife) cleans the bedrooms and looks after domestic arrangements. Wednesday is our day off and this gives you a chance to eat out in the village in one of several good restaurants.

We hold Office Hour in the bar every evening (not Wednesday) between 6 and 7pm. Over a sociable pre-dinner drink, you can chat with our hosts about the organised itineraries they are organising for the following day, or pore over maps and information files to create your own self guided itineraries… or simply enjoy a drink in the company of other like-minded guests. Our hosts will also be happy to chat with you about organised walks self guided walking and any other alpine activities, such as ice skating, high ropes, sport climbing and Via Ferrata.

Arguably, Haus Valentin ‘takes the biscuit’ in this regard.

You can stay in Chalet Haus Valentin on a halfboard basis.

Train
Getting to and from the Dolomites by Train

Overnight train across Europe

With people increasingly using train travel to move around Europe, here are some notes that might be helpful. If you need any help or advice or have any questions regarding how to use Trains to get to the Dolomites from the UK please call us on 01799 513331.

The train route to Venice goes via Paris.

Fairly soon you will be able to book trains from any major UK railway station to Venice Mestre or Venice Santa Lucia via the Eurostar website. Currently, however, you can only book from London through to Venice which can be done at www.eurostar.com

Other options include booking London/Paris using www.eurostar.com and then using www.raileurope.co.uk to book the second leg from Paris to Venice. See www.seat61.com/Italy.htm for details of travelling to Venice by train.

Unless you are staying in (or visiting) Venice, our advice is to disembark at Venice Mestre (every train stops there).

From here, you can hire a car or jump on a bus. They make the 15 minute bus trip to Venice Marco Polo Airport about every 30 minutes. We can arrange and airport transfer from Venice Marco Polo or for a hire car from Venice Mestre – For more information on getting a Transfer to the Dolomites – Click here

Overnighting in France or Germany – making the most out of your journey

  • Channel crossing deals are available through Collett’s.

Self Drive
Getting to and from the Dolomites by Car - Self Drive

Via Calais – By Ferry or Eurostar

Self-drivers should allow 12-15 hours from Calais. We have good directions through Germany, avoiding the road tolls in France via Innsbruck and the impressive Brenner Pass crossing from Austria into Italy. You may want to include an overnight stop en route, although with more than one driver it is feasible to do the journey in one stint. We reccommend P&O Ferries for crossings from Dover to Calais or use the Channel Tunnel.

  • Venice – add a day or two in Venice to your holiday.

Airport Transfers
Getting to and from the Dolomites by Car

From Venice Marco Polo or Venice Treviso Airports

Saturdays, Sundays, Tuesdays & Thursdays
Return Transfers at £80 per person to the Dolomites
Free Transfers for Children

Our airport transfer service is easy to use and popular. If you need any help or advice or have any questions regarding how our Airport Transfer System works please call us on 01799 513331.

Our transfer service is not a personal taxi service and waiting can be unavoidable, so please do not book a transfer unless you are relaxed about the possibility of having to kill time either in Venice or Treviso (if time permits) or at the airport. You can arrange your own car hire or taxi transport (from €225 – Venice Airports to the Dolomites, contact us for a quote) for you if you would prefer to eliminate the possibility of waiting.

In short, we send one vehicle down to the airport to drop off all our departees for their flights home, whilst the same vehicle will collect all our arrivals to take them up to the mountains. The transfer vehicle will drop off and collect from both Venice Marco Polo and Venice Treviso airports, which are about 25 minutes from each other. Thankfully, Treviso Airport is just off the motorway that takes you from Venice Marco Polo Airport to the Dolomites, so dropping in at Treviso is only a short detour.

CHANGES FOR SUMMER 2020 – Regular Collett’s guests will notice we have slightly changed our airport transfers this year.
Our transfers now operate on 4 days of the week – SATURDAYS, SUNDAYS, TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS.
We will now have set pick up times from the airports; 15:00 from Venice Marco Polo, and 15:30 from Treviso – to make use of this service, please ensure you book a flight that is due to land in good time for you to clear customs and baggage reclaim.
Please do not book a homebound flight that takes off before 11:00, as our transfer will not get you to the airport in time. We will endeavour to keep your waiting time at the airport to a minimum, but waiting can be inevitable if other guests are on earlier flights than yours.

Your flight should arrive in time for our 15:00 (Marco Polo) or 15:30 (Treviso) collection, and leave after 11:00 on the day of your departure. Make sure you understand how our transfer system works by reading this page in full – Thank you.

*Our transfer times are set 4 weeks in advance, so please check with us if you are booking within 4 weeks prior to your departure so we can advise you of the latest time of collection – Thank you.
*Children get a free Airport Transfer when an adult pays full price for a transfer – See Child Discounts in August (Dolomites).

You can find more information about traveling to the Dolomites without a car here.

Bike carriage is an additional £25 return when using an airport transfer.

Journey Time to Corvara – 3hrs

Homebound Transfers – on your day of departure, be prepared for an early start. If someone has a flight home at 11.00am, we have to leave the mountains at about 6am – 11.00am is the earliest we allow guests to book a return flight. Again, departure times are dictated by the flight times of all our transferees.

Venice & Treviso Hotels – many people choose to tag on a short stay in Venice or Treviso at one end of their holiday. Being in Venice already at the start of your holiday means you can make your way to meet a transfer at your leisure. Booking into Venice at the end of your stay means you can relax at your hotel in Venice and catch up on a few hours sleep in the event of you having to get out of bed for a 6am transfer down from the mountains. Click here for details of our Venice Hotels.

Travel Alternatives

  • Consider fly driving – we can help you arrange a safe, comprehensive and competitive car hire package giving you ultimate flexibility during your stay in the mountains. Click here for more details about Fly Driving.
  • Taxi – efficient but expensive – about €360 one way.
  • Public Transport – efficient, cheap but longwinded and time consuming – almost impossible to do if you arrive at the airport after 10am. Contact us if you would like to know more.
  • Without a car – It is possible to have a great walking holiday in the Dolomites without a car, but you might occasionally find yourself restricted. Contact us if you would like to know more or click here for more information.

Mountain Flowers – The Dolomites

29th February – I just received yesterday a copy of the new guidebook, from Colletts! David and Cliff did a great job! I was a little worried it would have too few specimens, like the Alpine Flowers book I bought in Corvara with just 70 flowers. Mountain Flowers – The Dolomites has nearly 140, with great photos, common names in three languages, and very useful environmental information. – Peter Stevens

1st March – I received ‘Mountain Flowers – The Dolomites’ yesterday and I love it! Very beautiful photography of native habitat of my favorite plants along with great information on their growing environment. Great to see them in their native haunts. I also like the way it’s bound. Thank you so much! – Eric Lucas

1st March – Brilliant, the colour production is very good and the size and spiral binding are just the job for field work by your target audience. Well done to David & Cliff! – Martin Rogerson

1st March – ‘Mountain Flowers – The Dolomites’ is just lovely! Perfect size to carry around, really easy spiral binding but more importantly, the content: The photos are clear, as are the descriptions and there is the right amount of information without being over wordy, thank goodness. I’ve spent a fair amount of time searching for a good and up-to-date guide, so I’m very happy. I wish you every success with the sales in the future. – Trina Stanton

1st March – Highly recommended – great photos – makes you want to go. Well done Cliff & David. – John Dower

Congratulations on your new book, “Mountain Flowers: The Dolomites”, that I received yesterday from Colletts. It is lovely guide, so well designed and layed out, with spectacular photos and just right write-ups. I really like the size, spiral binding and coating – just right for the pocket or pack and practical for hiking. I look forward, someday in the not too distant future, to using it on a visit to the Dolomites, preferably on one of your walks with Collett’s. I hope you will consider a similar volume for the Picos de Europa? Thank you for creating this lovely book. – Valerie Melanson

Thank you for my book which arrived a couple of weeks ago. I must say it has lots of really excellent points.
The size is good as it will fit in your pocket. The ring binder style is excellent, easy to turn to the flower picture and no spine to weaken causing you to lose pages. The way the flowers are grouped in colours is great as it will be easy to match species and of course the photography is beautiful . All in all a really well thought out book which I can’t wait to use in June when I take one of your holidays! – Beverley Wood
