Snowshoeing in the Dolomites

Waymarked trails, tranquil snowfields and magical winter scenery.
Organised Snowshoeing & Winter Walking - five days a week, optional and free of charge

The Italian Dolomites represent one of the world's largest and most attractive downhill ski areas, yet the domain of the snowshoer remains vast and largely unaffected by the presence of skiers. Waymarked tracks climb and descend through woodland, across tranquil snowfields and close to the rocky massifs themselves, exposing you at every turn to the most majestic scenery.

Above you, the Dolomites loom large, their rose pink hues against blue sky and brilliant white snow; below, the alpine villages with their churches and traditional farm buildings take on an almost 'toytown' character, whilst at eye-level on the other side of the valley the distant zig-zagging specks are skiers negotiating the manicured tree-lined pistes and enjoying the Dolomites in another way.

These are free of charge and completely optional. They are totally invigorating too. The exhilaration, fun and sense of adventure are immense; there is a certain joy about setting off in good company to spend a day under blue skies, venturing across virgin snow and exploring a real winter wonderland. Our itineraries vary in time, distance and nature. Some leave 'from the door', whilst others involve a short drive.

Organised snowshoeing Itineraries

Five days a week, optional and free of charge.

Snowshoes are available locally at about €6 per day and they are easily attached to a normal pair of walking boots. Pedraces is perhaps the best location for snowshoers/walkers and occasionally we offer people here the choice of two different excursions on the same day so that we can cater for people of varying fitness levels. In Arabba, we offer one snowshoeing itinerary five days a week.

For walkers and snowshoers Corvara is also an excellent springboard. From the door, walkers can follow the river as far as Pedraces or walk under the dramatic north flanks of the Sella. Or they can wander up the road to the Col Alt telecabines, which will whisk them up to the Pralongia Plateau, where they can put on snowshoes and set off on magnificent waymarked trails in awe-inspiring scenery.

Ultimately, you do exactly as you please, we are available to help, but careful not to interfere. If you prefer to organise your snowshoeing itineraries independently, we will leave you to your own devices. Itinerary ideas and information are always at hand at Office Hour from our organisers and in our chalets ~ These describe several magnificent local snowshoeing itineraries.

'Young, jagged and imposing, the Dolomites are perhaps the most striking mountains in Europe. Although they are a stunning location for summer hiking, they are at their most sublime in winter. Stepping into a pair of snowshoes might feel strange at first, but it will allow you to walk to parts of this snowbound wonderland that are normally reserved for mountaineers and extreme skiers.'
