Via Ferrata

Via Ferrata (klettersteig) in Italy

The unleashed exhilaration seen on the faces of those returning from a day out on a Via Ferrata bears testimony to the sheer pleasure on offer in these breath-taking mountains. Originally built to aid the movements of alpine military units during the First World War, the Via Ferratas now represent one of the area's most significant attractions.

They are, in effect, a range of protected scrambling routes, comprised of skillfully installed fixed cables, ladders and gorge-spanning bridges, which assist ascents to high level destinations, from which you can walk onward, often to a nearby rifugio, or back to the starting point via a different path. For anyone wanting to explore these routes, Arabba, Corvara and Pedraces are on the doorstep of many of the very best routes the Dolomites and even Europe has to offer.

Graded from 1A (a protected scramble) to 5C (experience required), they require a reasonable level of fitness, sure-footedness, awareness of alpine dangers and freedom from vertigo are important

Many more Via Ferrata routes have been built in recent years and today we have an extensive and well-charted network, maintained by the C.A.I. (Club Alpino Italiano). Trail signs to starting points are excellent and the routes are well waymarked. Usually it is simply a case of following the cable.

At your own risk

We organise walks, Via Ferratas and painting five days a week (not Wed. or Sat.) on a day-to-day and goodwill basis so that your holiday might be enhanced. High level walks may involve some scrambling, but generally they are technically unchallenging and as long as you are reasonably fit, you will enjoy them immensely. Moderate/Easier walks are more leisurely but still take up most of the day; they include regular pauses so the breathtaking scenery can be appreciated. Our organisers have great enthusiasm for the area and are experienced hill walkers and climbers. They are not qualified mountain guides and you accompany them at your own risk. Similarly, whilst we always endeavour to give appropriate advice to those walking or doing Via Ferratas independently, we cannot take any responsibility for it and you accept it at your own risk. Finally, you also use our 'Ideas & Information Files' and 'Route Laminates' at your own risk. On your arrival you will be asked to sign a disclaimer to this effect, a copy of which we will happily make available to you prior to you booking.
