Get ‘off the beaten track’ in the wild and wonderful Pyrenees. We believe the wilder character of the Pyrenees gives you the opportunity to experience one of Europe’s last largely undeveloped mountain ranges. The walking options are superb and hillwalkers who enjoy wilder mountain landscapes will thrive here.
Routes vary from walks upland pastures and woodland, to high trails, which wend their way through the peaks of the frontier ridge. Old trading, pilgrim and smuggling routes thread the mountain cols, whilst the wonderfully exposed ‘fajas’ of the Ordesa canyon are the ultimate in high-level exhilaration.
Your stay will surely be enhanced by our own walkers, the Collett’s Walks Team. You can join them (and other guests) day to day on stunning walks – except Wednesdays, our local day-off. Simply join us at Office Hour in the Hotel Sabocos each early evening and choose the walk that takes your fancy. (See below – ‘Planning your Walks’). Our organised walks take place in a relaxed and easy-going atmosphere. Armed with a packed lunch (available to you at €6 each), we set out at about 9am and, depending on the itinerary, return to the village in the mid or late afternoon, allowing you time to relax after the walk, maybe over a drink on the terrace or a stroll into the village. Here are the walks we offer on a daily basis:
Some days – or every day even – you might prefer to self-guide. The knowledge of the Collett’s Walks Team is available every evening at Office Hour, where, over maps and a pre-dinner drink, you can chat with them about walks that take your fancy. They will help you create a succession of appropriate and wonderful self-guided walks. You will come across members of our Walks Team throughout your stay and they will always be happy to help you and answer any questions.
Self-guiders can also refer to our invaluable ‘Ideas & Info’ files, which feature many walks of all grades, from moderate walks to challenging and dramatic high trails. For each walk we give the duration, ascent, degree of difficulty and the relevant section of map. You can also borrow on a daily basis an easy-to-carry Route Laminate for each itinerary. The files also contain numerous other options, scenic drives, places of interest, bike rides, canoeing, ideas for rainy days (as if!) and other days out.
Office Hour takes place each early evening (except Wednesdays) at the Hotel Sabocos. Over maps and a relaxing pre-dinner drink, you can chat with our Walks Team about the following day’s organised walks. We can help you decide which walk might suit you best. If you are travelling with people (or partners) of different fitness levels, you might choose to join different walks.
At Office Hour, self-guiders can create a succession of wonderful days out in the mountains with the enthusiastic help and local knowledge of our team. Also, you can read up on approximately 35 wonderful walks of all grades in our ‘Ideas & Info’ files, which are dotted around for all guests to browse.
If you fancy a day off from walking, we can introduce you to a host of local days out, whether you fancy visiting a local place of interest or you would like to participate in locally-provided activities, such as horse-riding, windsurfing, canoeing, mountain biking, high ropes etc. Lazy days are fine by us and you might just want to know where to find the perfect sunny spot in this enchanting Pyrenean retreat or spend a day in the spa relaxing in the thermal springs at the Baños de Panticosa. Whatever it is, just ask. We are here to ensure you get the very best from your time here.
Office Hour is nothing like as formal as its name suggests. It is a most popular, sociable and effective feature of a Collett’s Holiday, but it is also entirely optional and many guests just drop in for a relaxing drink with other guests. Flower lovers might compare photographs and gather around digital cameras to identify species. Walkers might busy themselves mulling over trails, from the idyllic to the awe-inspiring. Adventure seekers might plan high level glacial excursions. Either way, another memorable day in the mountains takes shape, leaving you to enjoy the evening with everything sorted for the next day.
People in search of moderate walking can venture out on a superb selection of delightful hikes, which unravel in the enchanting foothills beneath towering peaks. You will discover woodland rich with fauna, idyllic upland pastures, profuse and vibrant with flowers, and picturesque hamlets where time stands still. It is a pleasure to wander into a sleepy hamlet and sit at the table of a rustic café, gazing up at an unbroken rim of monumental peaks.
If you are a high-level walker, we look forward to helping you explore the exhilarating trails that will provide you with unforgettable days. Once any late lying snow has retreated, you can access many local classics, such as the awe-inspiring Ordesa and Monte Perdido UNESCO National Park, the Pic du Midi d’Ossau Circuit and the stunning peaks and trails above the Valle de Tena.
These cliffs are home to the uniquely dramatic rock cornices known as ‘fajas’, high altitude balconies of stone formed over millions of years. Along them cling sensational walking routes of varying exposures, providing walkers at every turn with adrenaline-fuelled views of the canyon and its many magnificent fairytale waterfalls.

On a Collett’s walking holiday in Switzerland’s Engadine valley we have two accommodation options. Half-board guests stay at the Hotel Maria, a charming mix of modern and traditional comfort, where you will eat fabulous cuisine prepared by talented Italian chefs. Staying here is a total delight. Run brilliantly by Regula and Andreas Ludwig, every member of their team has an eagerness to please. The warmth of their hospitality radiates throughout the hotel, making it easy to relax and feel at home.
If self-catering is your preference, then we have apartments within easy walking distance of the hotel. Simply contact us with your proposed dates and we will quickly send you details of what is available.
A very short walk from the pretty village centre of Sils is the Hotel Maria. Built in a typically Germanic alpine style, its impressive exterior is softened by pretty flower boxes and hides the immense warmth and welcome that awaits you inside.
The views from the hotel are absorbing and you can spend hours gazing across the valley to the looming Piz Lagrev, Piz Grevasalvas and the Lunghin Pass. Remarkably, somewhere up there, rainfall can fall in a single place and yet run off the mountain into 3 different seas hundreds of miles away; via the Danube to the Black Sea, via the Po to the Adriatic and via the Rhine to the North Sea.
The hotel is run by a husband and wife team, Regula and Andreas. They clearly love what they do and every member of their endlessly hospitable team is seemingly touched by their enthusiasm and focus on the well-being of guests. It is a pleasure to stay here and during your holiday you will surely appreciate some delightful and carefully thought-out hospitality touches.
Like a lot of good alpine hotels, the Hotel Maria provides the winning combination of being heartwarmingly traditional and simultaneously modern. It’s an attractive mix, which Andreas and Regula have got just right. It is easy to feel at home, whilst simultaneously being able to self-indulge in the many qualities that characterise the hotel.
All the bedrooms have attractive furnishings and offer a good level of comfort and relaxation. Superior bedrooms are available on request. Regula and Andreas are particularly proud of their dining room and this will certainly have positive repercussions on your stay. The dining room itself is an attractive space and a pleasure to be in. Breakfast is robust, semi-continental and buffet-style. A good packed lunch can be ordered daily at 8CHF. And each morning you can fill up your flasks with complimentary tea before you set off on a walk.
To ensure you have an excellent gastronomic experience here, Regula and Andreas have staffed the kitchen and dining room with talented and professional Italian chefs and waiters. A fantastic 4 course dinner with complimentary wine (or beer) is a focal point of each day. It is all very sociable: people with largely common interests, inspired by a day out in the beautiful Engadine mountains, eat at a couple of shared tables. Vibrant chat and laughter prevail, and it is a delightful way to end the day.
As with all our centre-based Classic Walking Holidays, you can stay with us here for as long as you wish, arriving and departing on the dates of your choice. If you are not staying for 7 nights, simply calculate the cost of your stay on a pro rata basis.
During your stay you will have your own house account for packed lunches and drinks. This can be settled on the eve of your departure. Wifi is available, as is parking for an extra daily fee, if you choose to fly-drive or self-drive.
Each early evening, Collett’s takes over one of the lounges for Office Hour, where we will help you plan your time in the mountains the following day, whether you join an organised walk or you opt to self-guide. Office Hour is optional, informal and sociable; a pleasant pre-dinner drink with other like-minded guests.
A Collett’s Classic Walking Holiday in Switzerland is available in a self-catering format by booking an apartment. All our apartments are within the village of Sils and only a short walk from the Hotel Maria where Office Hour takes place. As with all our accommodation, you can stay with us for as long as you wish, arriving and departing on the dates of your choice.
The quality of our self catering is excellent, all apartments come with a balcony, or a terrace if they are on the ground floor, and are furnished and equipped to a high standard.
Our apartments are self-contained, usually located in a large alpine chalet, which might house 2 or 3 other apartments. Bedrooms are separate from the living area, which might include the dining table and a small kitchen area. Some are ideal for couples, whilst others will suit a party of 4. With the use of sofabeds in the living area, there is more flexibility, especially where families are concerned. Delightful views can be enjoyed from either a balcony, terrace or garden. If you would like to book self-catering, contact us with your proposed dates and we will quickly send you details of what is available.

Been with them Collett's before. Excellent. I REALLY like that they will pick up from a centre as opposed to you having to make your own way to accommodation / start. Makes me choose Collett's Walking Holidays for that alone. went with another company to Italy. Were rubbish. also lots of pre-trip info with Collett's which is great.
We always have good holidays with you. We don’t have to plan routes or think about the walking, we can just go to the hotel, Do the walks, relax and enjoy ourselves.
I've travelled with you before and had two excellent holidays, Austria last year and the Dolomites about 11 years ago. This was my first solo holiday abroad and knowing the Collett's format, was entirely comfortable at travelling on my own.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all the Collett’s staff involved in setting up and running our recent Picos walking holiday. We had such a marvellous time. A truly great holiday made better by the dedication and enthusiasm of Sonny, Anna and Emily in the Picos. There is no doubt that we will travel with you again. Many thanks.
From the off, our lovely Colletts hosts Sonny, Izzie, Anna, and Emily made this a wonderfully convivial holiday, added to by an interesting and friendly mix of guests. Thank you for a wonderful stay in the Picos. We really enjoyed the walking, the supportive and helpful staff in particular, the scenery and the company. The hotel was good, too. Great.
We both thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in the Picos. We spent a lovely week walking, eating, drinking and socialising, with others who shared a common interest. The atmosphere was most convivial. I cannot praise enough you selection of resort staff. They are sociable, knowledgeable and long-suffering. Congratulations to your recruiting people.
We have been twice before - to the Pyrenees and Dolomites. The staff have always made the holiday. We had already met Keith and Henry last year and we were pleased to see them again. All the team are great fun, easy to talk to and get along with and they have a whole range of interests which they can talk about on the walks.
The team at the Picos were great, as usual you have selected your team very carefully and they all added to our enjoyment with their enthusiasm and intelligent conversation and knowledge.
Previous Collett's holidays. Like the flexibility of the arrangements and the walks. Staff very ;lovely
After arriving an hour late and being met by a smiling and helpful Henry, we knew right away that were going to have a great holiday......especially as one of us had been suffering from ill-health recently. The other guides - Emily, Natalie and Becky were also aware of this and planned very easy walks for us accordingly.
