Our centre-based walking holidays in the Pyrenees

The Pyrenees stretch for 480km from the Atlantic coast across to the Mediterranean, forming an impressive natural frontier between France and Spain. Old trading, pilgrim and smuggling routes thread the mountain cols, whilst the wonderfully exposed ‘fajas’ of the Ordesa canyon are the ultimate in high level exhilaration.

Our guided holidays in the Pyrenees vary from iconic long-distance routes such as the GR11, which is mouth-watering adventure for fitter hikers, to classic Pyrenean trails, which are a mountain paradise for moderate walkers, who seek out manageable high trails in the stunning surroundings of the Valle de Tena, not to mention the peaks of France and Spain’s iconic frontier ridge.

Our base for each of these holidays is the charming village of Panticosa. This historic mountain village is towered over by the majestic peaks of the Valle de Tena, our home in the Pyrenees, a chaotic jigsaw of wild rock formations, many soaring effortlessly above 3000m.

Walk from village-to-village along the Spain’s quieter coastlines

We offer two coastal village-to-village walking holidays in Spain. Firstly, our 7-night self-guided hike from Collioure to Cadaqués, (Colliaure being in France, Cadaques being in Spain) hugs the shores of the glittering Mediterranean, passing hidden coves and including some magnificent cliff-top trails, before relaxing evenings in handpicked accommodation located in quaint coastal villages or vibrant fishing ports, rich in a very particular local culture and heritage. This holiday also provides the daily option of a more demanding walk that is effectively an inspirational foray into the foothills of the Pyrenees, that characterise this heavenly coastal area.

Otherwise, there is the quieter Northern section of the iconic Camino de Santiago, which exposes you to the coastal drama and charm of Spain’s Costa Verde before heading inland towards historic Guernika. This lesser-frequented section of the Camino is an invigorating hiking adventure of glorious coastal views, characterful fishing ports, the occasional stretch of sandy beach, and a night in unforgettable San Sebastian.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Spain is a fantastic European destination for walking holidays, offering everything from high mountains and green valleys to dramatic coastlines and historic villages. Its excellent trail networks, varied landscapes and warm climate make it ideal for walkers of all abilities.

Some of Spain’s best walking regions include Andalucía in southern Spain, the Picos de Europa in the north, and the Pyrenees along the French border. These areas offer outstanding scenery, well-marked trails and a wide variety of walking terrain, from limestone peaks to lush valleys.

The best time for walking holidays in Spain is generally between April and October, depending on the region. Spring and autumn are ideal for warmer areas such as Andalucía, when temperatures are comfortable and landscapes are at their greenest. Summer and early autumn are perfect for higher mountain areas like the Pyrenees and the Picos de Europa, where cooler alpine conditions make longer walks more enjoyable. Our most popular walking holidays are carefully scheduled to match the best weather and trail conditions in each region, ensuring walkers experience Spain’s landscapes at their very best.

Walking holidays in Spain typically use small, locally run hotels, guesthouses and mountain inns that reflect the character of each region. Whether staying in a white village in Andalucía, a mountain village in the Picos de Europa, or a Pyrenean valley, accommodation is chosen for comfort, location, atmosphere & quality of food.

Spain offers an exceptional mix of landscapes, culture and climate. From the sunny mountains of Andalucía to the wild peaks of the Picos de Europa and the vast trails of the Pyrenees, it’s a country where walkers can enjoy great scenery, fantastic food and unforgettable routes all in one holiday.

Spain is an outstanding destination for walking, but it is best suited to walkers with a reasonable level of fitness and some hill-walking experience. Many of Spain’s most beautiful routes pass through mountainous and rugged landscapes, particularly in areas such as Andalucía, the Pyrenees and the Picos de Europa, where paths can be steeper and more demanding than in some other European regions.
For those who are new to walking holidays or prefer gentler terrain, centre-based walking holidays in places like the Dolomites, the Engadin in Switzerland or Ehrwald in Austria are often a better starting point, as they offer excellent walking without the sustained height gain and technical terrain found in much of Spain. Spain, by contrast, is ideal for walkers who want more dramatic scenery and a rewarding physical challenge.

No. Although Spain has a generally warm climate, temperatures vary greatly depending on region, altitude and time of year. Lower-lying areas in the south, such as Andalucía, can become very hot in mid-summer, which is why walking holidays are best enjoyed there in the spring and autumn, when temperatures are comfortable and landscapes are at their greenest.
Mountain regions like the Pyrenees and the Picos de Europa are much cooler, especially at altitude, making them ideal for walking in the summer and early autumn. Walking holidays are carefully scheduled to match the best local conditions, so that routes are walked when the climate is most suitable for enjoyable and safe mountain walking.

Walking in Spain offers some of the most varied scenery in Europe. In Andalucía, walkers pass through limestone mountains, deep gorges, cork forests and white villages, often with views stretching across rolling hills and olive groves. The region is also home to birds of prey such as eagles and griffon vultures.
In the Picos de Europa, the landscape becomes more dramatic, with towering limestone peaks, lush green valleys and rushing rivers. Wildlife here can include chamois, ibex and a wide range of alpine birds.
The Pyrenees combine high mountain passes, flower-filled meadows, waterfalls and glacial valleys. Walkers often spot marmots, vultures and mountain birds, all set against some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in southern Europe.
