How to get to Tuscany from Rome Fiumcino

Also known as ‘Leonardo da Vinci Airport’

There is a train station located inside the airport, close to the arrival and departure terminals. From here we recommend that you use the Leonardo Express as this is a non-stop service designed exclusively for airport passengers heading into Rome. It travels direct to Roma Termini with departures every 15 minutes, takes just 32 minutes and costs between €14-18 per person. Tickets can be purchased online, or in the Trenitalia App. Otherwise they can be purchased inside the Fiumicino Airport station at ticket offices and self-service kiosks in the airport and the station. Alternatively, the fixed price for a taxi for up to 4 people into the city centre is €40.

Once you arrive at Rome Termini train station it is easy to catch a direct train to Chiusi-Chianciano Terme which costs around €25 and takes around 2 -2½ hours. Tickets can be purchased on the Trenitalia website.

How to get to Tuscany from Rome Ciampino

First, you need to get to Rome Termini rail station. The quickest (but not cheapest) way to do this is by taxi. “Official” taxis are white and identified by the illuminated Taxi sign on the roof. Always check the price with the driver before you set off because there is a fixed rate of €30 for taxis taking up to 4 people between Ciampino Airport and Rome, so be sure to check with the the driver to avoid any scams.

Alternatively, there is a bus station right outside the airport terminal. Buses depart for the main Rome Termini station every 20 minutes, and cost €6.00 per person, the journey takes between 30 – 60 minutes depending on traffic. Tickets can be purchased at the Tourist Information Point (open every day 08:30-18:00), vending machines, or at Chef Express restaurant. The buses do not provide luggage racks, so you have to take your bags inside the bus.

Once you arrive at Rome Termini train station it is easy to catch a direct train to Chiusi-Chianciano Terme which costs around €25 and takes around 2 -2½ hours. Tickets can be purchased on the Trenitalia website.

Whether you fly into or out of Ciampino or Fiumcino, if you plan to head straight to Il Rigo in Tuscany we strongly recommend that your flight should land before 1200, to allow yourself enough time to get to Chiusi-Chianciano Terme for the 1700 pick-up. On your way home, we will drop you back at the train station for 0800 – so we strongly recommend that your flight does not depart before 1600.

Needless to say, flight times at Ciampino and Fiumcino become less of a consideration if you plan to spend some time exploring Rome either before or after your walking holiday in Tuscany as getting to the airport from the city centre is relatively straightforward. A win, win!
