For years people have come to the Dolomites to walk on the many marked paths, which meander at low, medium and high levels between the charming hamlets and villages of the South Tyrol. In summer, people are stopped in their tracks by the greens of lush pastures and woodland, not to mention the intense colours of flowerboxes and wildflower-strewn meadows. And yet in winter, when the vivid colours are gone and the valleys succumb to the brilliant white of heavy snowfall, the effect is equally spellbinding.
But whatever the seasonal changes, it is the ever-present Dolomites, looming large above the charming valleys, which make it such a paradise for walkers in both winter and summer. Furthermore, this unique combination of the 'enchanting' and the ‘awe-inspiring' can be admired from all walking routes, whether meandering along the valley bottom or snowshoeing under the vertical walls of the massifs on upland trails that contour the valley.
These walks are magical and will, at times, lead you to remote and completely silent parts of the valley. Regardless of the magnificent scenery, your exhilaration will somehow take on an extra dimension when you are out in the winter air, wrapped up warm with fresh snow underfoot and all around you, perhaps with a flask and a packed lunch in your rucksack or on your way to a mountain hut, where hot soup and more awaits. It is not surprising then that winter walking has always been popular amongst the local people and it is often their footsteps you end up following after fresh snow has fallen!
Another attraction for the winter walker is wildlife; here, it is not uncommon to see arctic hares, chamois, golden eagles and silver foxes.
Haus Valentin is the ideal base for walkers, offering excellent 'from-the-door' access to many delightful winter trails and a good range of different itineraries to suit individual preferences. At Haus Valentin you can join our organised winter walks. These range from easy riverside strolls to moderate walks higher up the valley, with occasional itineraries in neighbouring valleys too.
If you would prefer to walk independently, you can browse through our 'Ideas & Information Files', which you will find in the chalet. They provide easy access to several magnificent walking routes and, in most cases, a 'Route Laminate' is available too.
In Arabba, where downhill skiing is probably the main attraction, we can organise winter walking two days a week for those wanting to try something different.
