Ehrwald is the principal village of an alpine phenomenon called the Zugspitz Arena. When it comes to walking holidays in Austria, it is a top choice for hikers for many reasons, one of them being the outstanding access it offers to unforgettable walks of varying degrees of difficulty and ambition.

The ‘Arena’ itself is a dramatic natural amphitheatre of peaks, meadows and glacier-fed valleys straddling the Austrian-Bavarian border, primarily dominated by the Zugspitz (2962m), the summit of which is dissected by the Germany/Austria border, making it Germany’s tallest mountain and Austria’s 14th. Along with Lermoos and Biberwier, Ehrwald represents a perfect springboard for the many walks that radiate the peaks that form the Arena.

Needless to say, it’s one of the finest walking destinations in the Alps, and a key cornerstone of our centre-based walking holidays in the Alps. One significant bonus of basing your walking holiday in Ehrwald is the ease and efficiency of the local transport system. Public Transport in Ehrwald is both reliable and well-connected, allowing you to access trailheads quickly and cheaply.

That’s where the Z Ticket comes in…

The Z-Ticket: Discover the best of Austria’s Zugspitz Arena

Our Austria walking holiday is based in the Tyrol. Collett’s has always sought out destinations that (1) offer unforgettable walking opportunities across a range of fitness levels and (2) represent a region that is a little bit undiscovered by British walkers. Ehrwald ticked these boxes and many more besides. From here, a vast network of waymarked trails fans out into the Zugspitz Arena, whether you stick to riverside tracks, woodland, sleepy hamlets and flower-strewn meadows, or ascend higher to upland pastures, tranquil tarns and limestone ridges.

Every guest on a Collett’s walking holiday in Austria receives a complimentary Guest Pass on arrival, which provides you with free bus transport to and from local trailheads in and around the Arena, plus a range of local discounts. Depending on your holiday ambitions, the Guest Pass alone might be sufficient for you, but  if you want to unlock more regional potential by venturing further afield and completing itineraries by use of cable cars, gondolas and chairlifts regularly, you might want to upgrade to the Z Ticket.

What is the Z-Ticket?

The Z-Ticket – unsurprisingly Z stands for Zugspitz – is a regional transport pass covering most of the Zugspitz Arena. It goes beyond what the Guest Card includes, giving you unlimited use of local buses, gondolas and cable cars across the region (plus several other attractions that may – or may not – be part of your time here), all without fumbling for change or worrying about individual fares. It suits some walkers better than others, but it can work out in your favour financially if your walking itineraries and interests are relatively wide-ranging within the region.

The Collett’s Walks Team is here to help. On your arrival in Ehrwald, before you commit to the Z-Ticket, you can chat with members of our Walks Team, who will be happy to help you make the right decision if you are considering the Z-Ticket. They will chat with you about your aims and aspirations during your stay – and then inform you of Z-Ticket-friendly features within our Walk Pack that might correspond with the itineraries you end up selecting , such as Ehrwalder Almbahn, the Grubigsteinbahnen, the Zugspitze Cable Car and also a Boat Trip on the Heiterwanger & Plansee, which can be included on one of our favourite walking itineraries.

How much is the Z-Ticket and how do you get it?

The Z Ticket is easy to purchase on arrival in Ehrwald. Once you have decided it will enhance your stay, pop into the tourist office, which is very close to the Hotel Sonnenspitze, our handpicked 4* base  at the heart of Ehrwald. You can also purchase it at most cable car stations. You will need to register with your passport or ID, and you receive a physical card fully loaded until the day of your departure (or your chosen duration).

Practical tips:

  • Buy your Z-Ticket on the first full day of your holiday to make the most of every day.
  • Prices depend on the amount of days included in your Z-Ticket, starting from €93 (3 days) to €127 (6 days) – as mentioned, our Walks Team can help you make the most appropriate decision.
  • Keep your card on you at all times, as ticket inspectors might ask you to present it on buses or cable cars, gondolas etc.
  • If used regularly, the Z-Ticket inevitably represents good value for money, so some guests have been known to build theiritineraries around it. Our Walks Team can specifically advise you on the Z-Ticket’s highlights, in other words, the best activities and scenic gondola rides included in your Z Ticket.

On which Collett’s walks can you use the Z-Ticket?

This is where the Z-Ticket really earns its keep. Our Austria Walks Team have put together their recommendations for getting the most out of your pass across our walk programme:

  • The Zugspitz Summit Walk: Take the Tiroler cable car to the upper station and walk the high ridge with jaw-dropping views across Bavaria and the Austrian Alps. The ticket covers your ascent; walk down or ride back.
  • The Ehrwalder Alm: Ride the gondola to the mid-station and walk along the sparkling shores of Seebensee, one of the most photographed mountain locations in Austria!

  • Wolfratshauser Hütte: Make your way up to the Wolfratshauser Hütte and its unbeatable view through alpine forest and meadows on your way to the top station of the Grubigstein lift for a well earned ride down with the gondola.
  • Höllkopf Peak: A fantastic and accessible stand-alone peak with majestic views south. On a clear day, you can even see as far as Italy! Use your Z-Ticket for the ascent and descent via scenic chairlifts.

As always, our Walks Team is on hand daily to chat you through the options, notably each evening at Office Hour when guests gather over a casual (and optional) aperitif to plan their days.
