In uncertain times, booking with financial peace of mind is essential – as members of ABTA, our walkers have been doing this for over 23 years. In addition, our booking conditions are now more flexible than ever:
The Zugspitze at 2962m is Germany’s highest mountain and Austria’s fifteenth. The border of the two countries passes through its summit glacier. Its northern face dominates the sought-after Bavarian resort of Garmisch, whilst on its southern and Austrian side, described by locals as the sunny side, it converges with other prominent massifs to form a remarkable natural bowl known as the Zugspitz Arena.
Lying amidst lush and pretty alpine meadows in the middle of this seemingly unending rim of light-grey limestone pinnacles and ridges is Ehrwald, a picture-postcard Tyrolean village with startling views in every direction. It is a classic alpine gem, still comparatively undiscovered by British walkers, yet perfect for exploring an enchanting part of the main alpine chain with an abundance of walking of all grades and also numerous thrilling Via Ferrata (or Klettersteig).
The Zugspitze forms part of the Wetterstein group, extending to the east, whilst to the north there are the Ammergauer mountains, which give their name to the village of Oberammergau, world-renowned for its once-a-decade version of the Passion of Christ. Looming large to the south of Ehrwald is the Sonnenspitze (2417m), the northern terminus of the jagged Mieminger mountains with ridges like teeth, some half a mile long jutting into the sky. These stretch almost as far as Innsbruck, an hour away by car along the picturesque Gaistal with its sunny, wildflower-strewn meadows, some of which spill into Ehrwald itself.
Reaching out to the west of Ehrwald are the Lechtaler Alps, interspersed with pretty alpine villages and rife with mountain lakes and plunging streams. Indeed, water – from wide open lakes to high refreshing tarns – is a significant feature of the whole area.

Route Statistics – 13.6km, 1646m ascent, 733m descent
The Route – A short train ride takes you across the German border to Untergrainau, a pretty Bavarian hamlet on the outskirts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the beginning of the morning’s showstopper – Hell’s Valley Gorge. You explore this dramatic and tight-walled gorge via a series of engineered footpaths, tunnels, steps and bridges. You visit the Hollentalangerhütte, which serves excellent food on its large terrace, and offers expansive views of the dramatic valley beneath the Zugspitze glacier and summit. An impressive balcony footpath with sections of fixed cable brings you back and high above the gorge to your highest point of the day (approx. 1900m) and offers 360⁰ views to the distant flatter German plains and the Kreuzeckhaus just below.
Overnight Accommodation – Kreuzeckhaus (1651m)
Route Statistics – 15km, 1109m ascent, 701m descent
The Route – Today you have excellent views of the towering ridgeline of the border with Austria and can make out King Ludwig’s infamous hunting lodge perched on a plateau beneath the border. A descending balcony path brings you to the valley bottom of the Reintal, a deep valley that almost dissects the Wetterstein range. Passing alongside the crystal-clear waters of the Partnach river, you steadily ascend this vast valley before a final steep zigzagging path brings you to the top of the head wall and the impressively perched Knorrhütte, where your bed awaits. The hut is based at the bottom end of the Zugspitz bowl in a barren moonscape-like location, towered over by a horseshoe of seemingly inaccessible 2500m+ peaks including Germany’s highest.
Overnight Accommodation – Knorrhütte (2051m)
Route Statistics – 7.6km, 589m ascent, 282m descent – or – 10km, 204m ascent, 874m descent
The Route –
Option 1 – Your sights are set on the summit of the Zugspitze (2962m) and as a relatively short day it means you have plenty of time to spend on top and take in the views from its viewing platforms. You ascend across scree slopes and the moonscape wilderness of the Zugspitz bowl carved out by an ancient glacier, until you reach the retreating Zugspitze glacier (which has year-round sledging) and the Sonn-Alpin cable car station, which will take you directly to the summit. Or you could scramble via a protected path with fixed cable all the way to the summit along the border ridge (adding 400m ascent) – only in good weather and for those with a very good head for heights and surefootedness. From the summit, you descend into Austria via a gondola cable car, and a final woodland then meadow footpath brings you back to Ehrwald.
Option 2 – Alternatively, you can skip the Zugspitze summit, traverse across the base of the Zugspitz bowl, high above yesterday’s Reintal valley, and pass through the Gatterl; the old border gate between Germany and Austria. Descending into more open pastureland passing working farms and huts, you then take a cable car before a final riverside path brings you back to Ehrwald to complete the tour.

Terrain – You walk exclusively on easy-to-navigate waymarked routes, but some sections can be tricky to follow, particularly in bad visibility, so competence with map reading is required. Terrain varies from gravel tracks, narrow paths and loose rocky trails, particularly in the higher peaks . The route includes exposed sections and you should have some hiking experience, surefootedness, a good head for heights and a good level of fitness. Early season walkers should be aware that crossing patches of snow might be necessary in higher areas.
Accommodation – the itinerary is based on half-board, dormitory-style accommodation in the 2 mountain huts. Private rooms are available in the Kreuzeckhaus at a supplement of £20 per person, subject to availability, so please request at the time of booking, not afterwards!
IMPORTANT: Some dormitories have sleeping platform bed arrangements; sleeping side by side in a row. All dormitories are mixed sex and vary in size from hut to hut. No single supplements apply for dormitory accommodation but are applied to private rooms. You must supply your own sleeping bag liners for all dormitory accommodation. Towels are not provided in any hut accommodation – please bring your own.
These shorter treks have been designed to be tagged on to a night (or more) in Ehrwald at either end – contact us for options available.
Lunch – packed lunches can be purchased at all accommodations along the trek, except on your first day, when you can buy supplies locally in Ehrwald before you set off.
Breakfast & Dinner – Breakfasts are generous and usually buffet-style and you will definitely leave the hut feeling refuelled. Dinner is ordered from a set menu, usually with at least 2 choices for each course. Expect hearty and typically local cuisine, ideal for days out on the mountain. For vegetarians and other dietary needs, there will be less choice and variation, but every year it gets better.
Your options are as follows – as always, please contact us if you have any questions.
Airport Transfers – are available from Munich airport every Saturday. Flights arriving in Munich must be due to land before 5pm, and depart from Munich no earlier than 10:30am. Journey Time – 2hrs – £80 per person return.
Arrive independently? – we can provide free parking if you fly-drive or self-drive from home.
Rail – From Ehrwald station it is a 15 minute walk to the village centre. There are 2 bus lines that connect the station with the main village square, a 10 minute ride away. Please contact us for details and bus times. Alternatively, it is a 5 minute taxi ride. The company ‘Shuttle & More’ offer taxis within Ehrwald and offer a 24 hour service with excellent English. Email: office@shuttle-and-more.com Web: www.shuttle-and-more.com
The ‘Werdenfels & Bayern Tickets’ – For journeys in either direction between Munich airport and Ehrwald, a straight-through ‘Regio Werdenfels Ticket’ can be purchased. The ticket price is approx €19 plus €4 for every additional person up to a maximum of 4 additional people. Alternatively, you can buy a ‘Bayern Ticket’. This allows unlimited travel on DB and S Bahn trains from Munich airport, Munich and Ehrwald within a single day. Valid from 9am Monday to Friday and 12am midnight on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. The ticket price is approx €23 plus €5 for every additional person up to a maximum of 4 additional people.
You can plan and book rail tickets for all European travel via the website: www.bahn.com. Normally you can buy tickets up to 90 days in advance. Tickets can be paid for online and then printed out at home in advance. Equally, tickets can be bought from machines at the station/airport on the day of travel.
Private Taxis – can be arranged from Munich or Innsbruck.
Homebound Transfers – please do not book a flight home that takes off before 10:30am. We will not get you to the airport in time!
Final Day – be prepared for an early start. If someone has a flight home at 11.00am, all transferees will have to leave Ehrwald at 7am.
Extend your stay? – if you would like to add a few days before or after your Hut to Hut tour as part of a Collett’s centre-based walking holiday in the Tyrol & Bavarian Alps, simply let us know and we can help you arrange this.
Walking Holiday & Travel Insurance – We recommend you buy a good insurance package at the time of booking (or certainly prior to purchasing flights or booking ferries etc.), so that you are covered in the unlikely event of you having to cancel for an ‘insurable’ reason. You join us on our organised walks at your own risk, responsible for your own safety, as part of an autonomous group, in which each member has a duty of care to each other.
You will be asked to sign a disclaimer in this respect. This is an explanation of the status of our organised itineraries whether they involve walking, snowshoeing or skiing. We refer to such itineraries as organised, not guided. They are available on a basis of goodwill so that you might enjoy an itinerary you might not otherwise discover. They are nothing more than an opportunity to go out in beautiful scenery in company. It is a fact that mountains, mountainous areas and activities undertaken in them are associated with personal injury and death. By coming to such areas, you are exposing yourself and your party to the possibility of personal injury or even death. In such an event, Collett’s will not be held responsible for your interest in mountainous areas and your involvement in mountain pursuits, which can occasionally have tragic consequences.
In these days of litigation it is important you know that every time you (and each member of your party) join us on an organised itinerary you do so at your own risk as part of an autonomous group, in which each member of that group has a duty of care to the other. This is no different from the responsibilities you have on a casually arranged weekend walk with friends or family in the UK. Our hosts all have experience of the mountains, some more than others. Some have qualifications relevant to mountain activities, but they are not qualified mountain guides. We recruit and train our outdoor staff in line with a Health & Safety Policy, which is based on risk assessment and recognised mountain safety procedures.
Not being professionally responsible for you on organised itineraries does not mean we ignore safety, nor does it make us exempt from owing a duty of care to each person who joins us on an organised itinerary. Your safety is paramount and we therefore take our own measures to maximise safety. We do this in line with legal requirements pertaining to duty of care. We apply Codes of Practice to the procedures carried out by our outdoor staff. We assess, manage and communicate risk. We try to make people aware of the importance of mountain safety and to highlight their responsibilities when part of a group.
Our Codes of Practice should not really be taken into consideration by you when deciding to join an organised itinerary, for at the heart of our procedures are basic mountain safety measures, which should be undertaken by every individual when preparing for a day in the mountains. Finally, during your stay you act at your own risk on any ideas, information and opinions you might acquire from our hosts or from material prepared by us to help you get the most from the area. Thank you for your understanding on all of the above.
If you want to cancel your booking: the person who made the booking must send this in writing to us, by email or post. You will be charged a cancellation fee as follows: If you cancel (this is the date on which we receive your written notice of cancellation during the hours of 9am to 5.30pm):
More than 28 days before your arrival date: deposit only;
Within 28 days of arrival date: 100%
Charges are shown as a percentage of your total holiday cost (including any excursions).
Covid-19: If you cancel your holiday within 28 days of your arrival date because you or your travelling companion / any member of your booking party tests positive for COVID-19 or you are required to self-isolate (in accordance with then applicable UK coronavirus government guidance) (a “COVID-19 reason”), whilst the above cancellation fees will still apply, most travel insurance policies now include such cancellation due to a COVID-19 reason and for this reason alone we strongly recommend that you purchase adequate travel insurance which includes the appropriate COVID-19 cover.
If you need to cut your holiday short (curtailment): If you are forced to return home early, we cannot refund the cost of any services you have not used. If you cut short your holiday and return home early in circumstances where you have no reasonable cause for complaint about the standard of accommodation and services provided, we will not offer you any refund for that part of your holiday not completed,or be liable for any associated costs you may incur. Depending on the circumstances, your travel insurance may offer cover for curtailment and we suggest that any claim is made directly with them.
This clause 8 outlines the rights you have if you wish to cancel your booking. Please note that there is no automatic statutory right of cancellation under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charge) Regulations 2013 (Directive 2011/83/EU).
We may occasionally have to make changes or cancel your booking and we reserve the right to do so at any time.
Changes: If we make a major change to your holiday, we will inform you as soon as reasonably possible if there is time before your departure. You will have the choice of accepting the change of accommodation, or you can take any alternative accommodation we are able to offer you (you will pay the increase in cost if the replacement is advertised at a higher price than your original booking, or receive a refund of the difference if it is less expensive), or a refund. These options don’t apply for minor changes. Examples of minor changes include, but are not limited to, change of accommodation to another of the same or higher standard, temporary withdrawal of facilities or seasonal unavailability of amenities.
Cancellation: We will not cancel your travel arrangements less than four weeks before your departure date, except for reasons beyond our control (also known as force majeure as defined below) or failure by you to pay the final balance. If your holiday is cancelled you can either have a refund or accept an offer of alternative accommodation of comparable standard from us, if available (we will refund any price difference if the alternative is of a lower value). Any amendment or cancellation fees you incur in terms of other arrangements you have made with other providers under separate contracts are not claimable from us. Please note that if a change or cancellation occurs because of circumstances beyond our control, for example as a result of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union, war, riot, industrial dispute, actual or threatened terrorist activity and its consequences, natural or nuclear disaster, fire, adverse weather conditions, flood, epidemic or pandemic illness and all similar situations we will have no further liability to you. No compensation, costs, damages, losses, expenses or any other sums, including the cost of securing alternative transport or accommodation will be paid by us.
Force majeure: Except where otherwise expressly stated in these Booking Conditions, we will not be liable or pay you compensation if our contractual obligations to you are affected by “unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances” meaning any event beyond our control, the consequences of which could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. Examples include warfare and acts of terrorism (and threat thereof), civil strike, significant risks to human health such as the outbreak of serious disease including any mutation or variation of, and the ongoing effects of, Covid-19 or SARs-COV2, or natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes or weather conditions which make it impossible to travel safely to the travel destination or remain at the travel destination, the act of any government or other national or local authority including port or river authorities, industrial dispute, lock closure, natural or nuclear disaster, fire, chemical or biological disaster, unavoidable technical problems with transport and all similar events outside our or the supplier(s) concerned’s control.
Our liability, except in cases involving death, injury or illness, shall be limited to a maximum of two times the cost of your holiday package with us. Our liability will also be limited in accordance with and/or in an identical manner to: (a) the contractual terms of the companies that provide the travel services that make up your holiday package. These terms are incorporated into this booking; and (b) any relevant international convention, which limit the amount of and conditions under which compensation can be claimed for death, injury, delay to passengers and loss, damage and delay to luggage. We are to be regarded as having all benefit of any limitation of the extent of or the conditions under which compensation is to be paid under these or any conventions. You can ask us for copies of the travel service contractual terms, or the international conventions.
Other than as set out above, and as is detailed elsewhere in these booking conditions, we shall have no legal liability whatsoever to you for any loss or damage.

Absolutely awesome solo hut to hut walking trip. Collett's do as they say "you do the walking we do the rest". First class logistics for a perfect trip.
My first experience of a self-guided walking holiday (or indeed any type of organised walking holiday), and I would definitely consider further tours, with Collett's as my first port of call. Having someone knowledgeable create an itinerary and make all the accommodation arrangements is so convenient. The 3 night Zugspitz walk was a g(Read more...)
