I had a fantastic, but short trip to Matrei in late June, hiking to see the alpine flowers on the higher routes of the Austria High Tyrol. I saw a fantastic array of Primroses (Primula minima and Primula glutinosa) on the high slopes and trumpet gentians (Gentiana acaulis) in the meadows, along with Androsace alpine and "Edelweiss" in the screes and rocks. I have a list of over 30 species identified and over 800 pictures from only 4 days walking. I am happy to share a few pictures, if of interest. The scenery was stunning, with snow-covered glaciers, steep-sided valleys and many waterfalls, and very different to the nearby Dolomites (which I know very well).
The trip was a big success, in large part due to the friendliness, good humour and expert help of Charlie, Caroline, Angus and Ally. The Hotel Hinteregger was very comfortable, with an excellent standard of cuisine, with local inspiration and plentiful options. The leaders served as excellent guides on the organised walks, but they were also always willing to provide thoughtful and appropriate suggestions for self-guiding routes.
This is my third Collett's holiday and I am certain that it will be repeated soon. Collett's is unique in the market for its organised mountain trips, with extremely knowledgeable leaders and unparalleled knowledge of the routes. It has a family feel to everything they do and its tour leaders do great credit to the company. Extremely highly recommended for all mountain lovers.
