Kitzbuhel to Cortina – A grand alpine traverse
An ever-changing 7 night trek taking in the best of the Austrian & Italian Tyrol
- Weave your way from the foothills of Austria to the high drama of the Italian Dolomites
- Your luggage is moved on daily, so you can marvel at amazing landscapes carrying only a day sack
- Stay in handpicked 3* hotels and rural ‘garnis’ (Tyrolean guest houses)
Self-guided Point-to-Point from Kitzbuhel to Cortina
A 7-night self-guided trek taking in the gems of the Austrian and Italian Tyrol. Starting from the renowned resort of Kitzbuhel, this hike meanders for 2 days through alpine villages and upland pastures before making a spectacular entrance into central Europe’s largest Natural Park, the Hohe Tauern, a natural theatre of glaciated giants, where Collett’s has a walking holiday base in the pretty village of Matrei. You will pass through Matrei and trek into Italy, stimulated by views of the majestic Dolomites ahead. Your final day is spent exploring the iconic Tre Cime (Three Peaks) before enjoying beautiful Cortina d’Ampezzo, the ‘pearl’ of the Dolomites. You will stay in 3* hotels or ‘garnis’ (which are hospitable Tyrolean guest houses) and you will be free to walk with only a day sack because your luggage will be moved on for you each day.
You will benefit significantly from our comprehensive route notes and area map on a trek that offers a truly abundant variety of terrain and landscapes. This route primarily follows tracks and well-trodden footpaths which are good underfoot. The route is generally well waymarked and easy to navigate. The itinerary includes a couple of days, which are more isolated, harder underfoot and include more ascent.
You will start your trek in Kitzbuhel on a Saturday, either having arrived there independently or by joining a Collett’s transfer from Munich Airport. Kitzbuhel might be better-known for its Hahnenkamm downhill race in winter, but it is an attractive high-profile alpine centre in summer with upscale shops and cafes lining the streets of its medieval centre.
A grand alpine traverse
This Point-to-Point route can be started on any Saturday between 20 June & 20 September 2020. We especially recommend June, early/mid July and September, assuming you prefer to hike when the trails are less frequented. Please book early if you can, as this makes it easier for us to guarantee your accommodation and confirm your arrangements quickly. For a day by day itinerary, please download the factsheet using the link below.
Terrain Notes: This route primarily follows marked mountain tracks and well-trodden hiking trails which are good underfoot. Some forest paths may be slippery when wet. The route is generally well waymarked and easy to navigate. A couple of the more isolated days are harder underfoot and include more ascent. Larger ascents can be avoided using cable cars, and it is possible to shorten some stages by using public transport and/or taxi. This itinerary is also suitable for children aged 14+ who have a certain fitness level and an interest in hiking.
If you are in any doubt whether this holiday is suitable for you, please call us on 01799 513331 or email email@example.com and we will be happy to help.
This holiday can start on any Saturday between 19 June and 11 September. It is primarily designed so that guests can arrive at Munich and depart from Venice.
Munich to Kitzbuhel
Book a Collett’s Transfer from Munich Airport or travel independently
Guests trekking in Austria & Italy with Collett’s on the Kitzbuhel to Cortina Grand Traverse can book an airport transfer from Munich Airport for £60pp. This will drop you at your first-night hotel in Kitzbuhel. For details, please see the ‘Munich – Kitzbuhel Transfers’ section below. If you choose to get to Kitzbuhel independently from Munich, the train is easy and inexpensive (advance prices from €20). It takes about 2 ½ hours. Trains depart regularly throughout the day, and it might involve two changes (usually at München Ost & Wörgl). Visit www.bahn.com for more information, timetables and prices.
Cortina to Venice
The best way to reach Venice is via the Cortina Express coach service. It generally has 3 departures each morning (08:00, 09:30 and 11:30am) and takes about 2 hours. Visit www.cortinaexpress.it/en/ to confirm timetable and pricing before booking your return flight. You may choose to spend time in Venice after your trek. If so, contact us for a list of recommended hotels.
Munich to Kitzbuhel Transfers – Saturdays – 2hrs
Transfers are available every Saturday – from Munich Airport to your first-night hotel in Kitzbuhel.
The transfer vehicle brings guests (departing from our walking holidays in the High Tyrol) to Munich for their flights home. The same vehicle then collects guests starting their walking holidays in Austria, but as Kitzbuhel is on our route to the High Tyrol, we are able to use this transfer for you, our Kitzbuhel to Cortina trekkers. The journey to Kitzbuhel is a little under 2hrs. Whilst it is possible to return to Kitzbuhel (or Munich) at the end of your holiday, please speak to us before booking any flights, so that we can discuss the options with you.
Please ensure your flight lands at Munich Airport before 3pm!
The time of your transfer will be determined by the flight times of everyone we collect on that day but 3pm is the deadline, as this allows us to get everyone up to the mountains in time for dinner. We try to keep waiting to a minimum but, for example, if your flight lands at 11am and we have other arrivals landing at 2.30pm, the transfer will set off at 3pm. On the other hand, if everyone has landed prior to, say, 1pm, then we can get on our way earlier. In any event, we will write to you about 2 weeks before your holiday with the exact time of your transfer, once we know the flight arrival times of all our Austria-bound guests.
Please do not book flights until your itinerary has been formally confirmed by us. Thank you.

Guest Reviews - Hut to Hut Hiking
Staff were super helpful and responsive to all our questions before the trip. The quality of that initial service was definitely why we chose to go with your company. Pete was fantastic!
Love that you recycle and compost; appreciated the non-dairy milk at breakfast!
The maps for the self-guided 7-day trek were excellent. Great route, sup(...)
This was an excellent trip and coming back to work has been really tough this week however we do have several hundred pictures to edit and look back on! Everything went really smoothly your maps were clear and the Rifugios excellent although as a non meat eater I may well have consumed my body weight in cheese in various forms! Thanks for all (...)
We appreciated your assistance and support at Venice airport when the non-arrival of baggage needed to be reported. This delayed our transfer departure for over an hour.
We had previously stayed with Collett's in the Yorkshire Dales and enjoyed our experience. The range of walks and activities offered for the Dolomites was excellent.
The package and itinerary for a hut to hut walk. Suited the short amount of time we were able to stay. Great to self guide but to have all the bookings and transfers taken care of.
My husband and I recently did the Northern Dolomites hut to hut self guided trip. We had no issues for any logistics during our vacation. The staff at Collett's was super responsive and well organized. We provided feedback on some “finer points” that we felt could be improved but they are minor and only icing on the cake...we would definitel(...)
We did the Grand Tour of the Alta Badia. All the organisation from Collett's was perfect - From the initial conversation a few months ago, to the info pack sent out a couple of weeks before the trip, to the actual bookings and rifugios themselves. It couldn't have gone more smoothly. The dolomites are such a special area. You sure do work for (...)
From the moment I reached out about planning a trip, to the last round of farewell beers at Valentin House in Badia, Collett's friendly, knowledgeable and efficient team delivered an amazing experience. Office staff was always quick to get back to us--whether my question was about potential dates, upcoming weather, appropriate footwear or cell(...)
We had a wonderful hut to hut hike in the Dolomites thanks to Collett's. They were always quick to respond to any questions/concerns as we made our plans... and I asked a lot of questions! At the first chalet in Badia we had time with staff to answer any questions about the daily hikes they had mapped out for us... then they served us a lovely(...)
We completed a 6 day tour of the Alta Badia and the route was spectacular every day. After speaking with other hikers in the huts I was so glad that Colletts had made our arrangements, others had difficulty booking for themselves.
Certainly worth paying the extra for private rooms as opposed to dorms.
Overall we had an excellent experience, (...)
We enjoyed our Hut to Hut self guided 7 nights Central Dolomites and Sella Grand Tour in August 2018. From the time we arrived at Corvara we had excellent service and all the young staff were friendly and very helpful. Beth was extremely helpful with guiding us through our walk. Even during our walk we called Beth and she was very helpful a(...)
Thank you for helping organising an epic hut to hut adventure in the Dolomites. The maps and information were detailed and the staff were amazing. Great food and drink at the chalet too!
Great few days on hut to hut in Erhwald. Hotel Alpin was a lovely stop at either end of the walk. Hostess very friendly and welcoming.
We really enjoyed the huts- two very different in character. Wolfrathausen friendly, quiet and great food. Coburger bustling, good hearty food, fantastic setting and we really appreciated having our own ro(...)
We had a lovely holiday and were very impressed by Collett's. Thank you very much and we thought the staff at Chalet Angelo were great, plus all the Rifugio bookings and taxi bookings you did for us were really efficient and lovely.
Had been to Pyrenees with you a few years ago. Chose Collett's then because we knew Spanish mapping wasn't great so wanted to walk with people with local knowledge. Dolomites highly recommended by other guests in Pyrenees and we had never been there. Hut to hut was attractive option.
We had a great holiday and may well return to do a differ(...)
We have been to Corvara in 2015 and 2016 with you.
We also did a bespoke hut to hut which your team organised and explained to us very well.
What stands out about Collett's is the quality of the host team in Corvara, who were great (again). They were unfailingly helpful, interested, friendly and great company. Our thanks to them, again.
Extremely welcoming and friendly staff. We did a self guided 4 day hiking in Alta Badia and your route choice was outstanding! Your website was easy to follow and the photos were excellent. When I inquired about a self guided trip the response was prompt, clear and helpful. Your pricing is also reasonable.
The routes were superb, the staff was very helpful and welcoming, the scenery magnificent, the hotels excellent, the food great, and the directions very precise. There were only a couple of times in our five days that we had any doubt about the route to follow. We were absolutely delighted with the trip.
I would say that this was the trip of a lifetime, except that we plan to return. We hiked "hut to hut", or more accurately chalet to chalet. The routes were well planned, the scenery was incredible, the accommodations were great, the food was wonderful, the directions were meticulous, and I am running out of superlatives. We did the five-da(...)
Friend recommended & you seem to provide a competitive comprehensive service which suited our needs. We did 6 day high route hut to hut so spent night in angelo arrival & verena at end. very impressed with all staff & facilities.
I have previously done hut to hut trekking in the Dolomites and my wife has always been keen to do this. I looked at trying organise this myself but after looking at Collett's and they did everything but the walking it was an obvious choice.
First time we have travelled with Collett's and it won't be our last. Organisation was excellent fro(...)
My holiday was a Hut-to-Hut Walk in the Dolomites, to which I added some Via Ferratas. Having booked all my accommodation for the eight days, the pack of information you sent me was very comprehensive. Consequently, everything went like clockwork.
I wanted to amend my Hut-to-Hut itinerary slightly, to spend 2 days on Via Ferratas, and you w(...)
Many thanks for an excellent hut to hut holiday. The trip notes provided were thorough and it all went without a hitch but best of all are your chalet staff who were all extremely helpful and a credit to Collett's.
The trip itself was demanding but well worth it with some of the best scenery that I have ever seen.
No doubt I will holiday(...)
We had an excellent week of walking, despite unexpected snow in August! The route was well thought out and at a good level for our children (the youngest being nine). The scenery was stunning, the accommodation and food along the way were great. A fantastic week and one that we'd love to do again.
Collett's were one of the few that organizes short (3-4 days) self guided hikes in the Italian Dolomites (as far as we could find on the internet).
Value for money?: Yes, the planning of the routes, booking the rifugios and the information we got on arrival were well worth it.
I thought the three staff members I met in the reorder and during my hut to hut tour were absolutely first class, friendly helpful and I enjoyed meeting them as they happened to be doing some visiting of the rifugi. They were Beth, max and Alison.
They are also really loyal to Collett's and spoke so warmly of the company.
The so-called huts are 3* chalets with great food and each day begin with a chair lift to get right up close and personal with alpine fields of wild flowers and amazing rocks formations. This part of northern Italy was part of Austria before WWl which explains the Italian Tyrol which still looks, feels and sounds more like Austria. La Marmola(...)
Chris was very knowledgeable & thorough with the self guided routes &maps plus additional info such as bus times. He put all my concerns to rest.
The hut to Hut routes & plans were excellent. The hut to Hut tour was right in the area I wanted to explore & it was the perfect level for my first solo trek. Good support, but plenty of independ(...)
The professional image of the website determined our decision to go with Collett's for our holiday.
It would have been nice to receive the hard copy of the itinerary, guest handbook, maps and route prior to our departure for us to vet. We live in Australia, and were told on the 15th June that these would be posted to us, however, we had al(...)
We were a grownup family of 6, each person thought the hut to hut holiday was one of the best they had enjoyed. The "huts" were very welcoming and standards were high for that type of accommodation . Thank you.
The reception hosts at the Haus Valentin where outstanding friendly and informative with attention to detail, I was impressed that even though I was a late arrival and missed any talks, the Hut to Hut people made a clear point of seeking me out to chat about my routes starting the next morning.
When I return I would with out doubt look at s(...)
We were a grownup family of 6, each person thought the holiday was one of the best they had enjoyed. The "huts" were very welcoming and standards were high for that type of accommodation . Thank you.
Chalet was great.
We walked largely from hut to hut where the food was very good. The first night was in the Hotel Panorama where the food was excellent.
We spent in total 3 off 11 nights in the Chalet Angelo. We were a self guided group using an outline of a route supplied by Colletes. This worked very well. The routes were excellent and ju(...)
We were recommended you by friends who stayed with you last year. We chose Collett's because it offered assistance in booking the hut to hut walk and we liked the idea of getting help with planning our own itineraries for day walks. We also very much enjoyed the organized walks. Kelly was extremely helpful and friendly in going over our hut to(...)
We did the hut-to-hut tour and all the hotels and one hut we stayed in were excellent apart from the hotel in Ortisei which felt a little tired. Really well organised holiday and all the staff were really helpful. The hotel Panorama in Corvara was excellent.
2 years ago I was searching for a Dolomites wildflower guide and stumbled across you online. We had a few days open before a hut-to-hut hike starting from Bolzano, and I'd always wanted to try Via Ferrata. After those days in the Dolomites, my husband promised me we could return. So we did this year - and will again, I hope. And what price cou(...)
