Explore the valleys, vineyards and exquisite landscapes of the Douro river

This is an 8 night, self-guided walking route through an astonishingly beautiful, UNESCO World Heritage landscape in the Douro Valley. A paradise of vineyards and traditional villages, on this trip you’ll make your way from Porto walking into the very heart of the Douro region, exploring the picturesque slopes and valleys that make this area famous.

The adventure begins with a scenic train journey through the Douro valley from Porto to Pinhão, with views of the once-treacherous river that was used as the main route for transporting barrels of the region’s celebrated port wine.

In this thriving hub of production, museums such as the Bread and Wine Museum in Favaios offer an intimate appreciation of local traditions and winemaking. Wine is a year-round passion here, and you’re sure to spot growers at work, tending vines and terraces. You’ll end your week back in the vibrant city of Porto. Whatever your interests – boat tours, medieval architecture, port cellar tours, fine dining, the magical interiors of the famed Libraria Lello bookstore – you’ll find the perfect conclusion to your holiday in Porto.

On a Collett’s village-to-village holiday, you do the walking – and we take care of all the rest. Our comprehensive maps and route notes make for effortless navigation, while your baggage is transported daily to the next carefully-selected overnight stop. Each evening you’ll be welcomed into the comfort of traditional accommodation, in charmed surroundings. You decide your dates, and we’ll ensure everything else is organised to perfection.

If travelling by train, a private taxi pick you up at your hotel and take you to the station. Enjoy the river views all the way to the small riverside village of Pinhão, where the train station is decorated with painted tile panels depicting Douro wine production. Once there, you can take a boat upstream (optional, paid locally) for a different perspective of the valley.

Should you decide to travel by boat, as well as the views, you’ll have the experience of going through two locks that are a feat of engineering which has transformed the Douro River and enabled boats to travel safely between Porto and the wine region.
